To Be Like Me (TBLM) is a Richardson, Texas-based nonprofit dedicated to building empathy, kindness, and compassion in communities across North Texas. Through our signature programs, trained community advocates who live with disabilities, share their lived experiences with students, corporate employees, and community organizations — sparking meaningful conversations and lasting perspective shifts. Our cornerstone offering brings these programs directly into schools through in-person field trip experiences, while also reaching corporations and community groups through a range of flexible delivery formats. The Director of Development plays a pivotal role at To Be Like Me by providing strategic leadership for all fundraising and advancement activities. This role is responsible for building and sustaining a robust development program, with a particular focus on cultivating corporate partnerships and securing major grant funding. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Development drives revenue growth through comprehensive donor stewardship, event management, and integrated marketing and communications strategies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Development
- Develop and execute annual and multi-year development plans, fiscal year budgets, and strategic planning processes for the organization's advancement goals in close collaboration with the Executive Director.
- Maintain a comprehensive donor database and execute prompt, personalized acknowledgement of all donations.
- Research donor prospects and maintain an active, current donor prospect list to support ongoing cultivation.
- Oversee all aspects of corporate engagement including prospect identification, invitations, partnership strategy, agreements, and stewardship.
- Prepare the Executive Director for donor meetings and major donor interactions by developing thorough meeting briefings.
- Serve as an active member of the Board Fundraising and Marketing Committee, including developing agendas with the committee chair for regular meetings and supporting Board members in making their own financial contributions.
- Lead all aspects of foundation grant activity, including prospect research, proposal writing, reporting, and ongoing relationship cultivation with foundation partners.
- Work closely with the Director of Operations on invoicing, grant tracking and other fiscal and operational initiatives.
- Foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, promoting fundraising as a shared responsibility.
Event Management
- Manage, plan, and implement major, minor, and third-party fundraising events in close coordination with the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
- Create comprehensive event action plans with the event committee and team, including timelines, marketing and communications strategies, and clear responsibility assignments.
- Oversee all revenue and profit-generating activities for events and ensure alignment with organizational brand standards.
- Build knowledge and community relationships to stay current on local events and initiatives that may impact fundraising efforts.
Marketing & Public Relations Management
- Oversee the development of the annual marketing and communications strategy while supervising the Marketing & Communications Specialist.
- Serve as the final approver and editor for all major external and internal communications initiatives, both online and in print.
- Support the development of the Annual Report, impact reports, donor communications, and other collateral.
- Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Specialist on partnership development, including press releases, TV and radio media campaigns, and website improvements.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Minimum 10 years of professional work experience in the nonprofit sector and 5 years at least in fundraising or development.
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
- Experience and proven track record in the development and implementation of a broad-based fundraising program in 3 key areas: individual, corporate, and foundation grants
- Event fundraising planning experience preferred.
- Ability to understand and create budgets and other financial documents.
- Creative problem solving and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills with the ability to oversee marketing and communications materials while maintaining the TBLM brand.
- Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to multitask, set priorities, meet deadlines, and prioritize/plan work activities. Use time effectively - set goals and objectives and demonstrate independent timekeeping skills.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office, donor management/fundraising platforms, and social media platforms.
- Available to work some evenings and weekends or remotely as needed, for events and projects.
